Sierra Club: Historic Mining of Alabama’s Coastal Sands

April 2, 6:00 pm8:00 pm

You are invited to Mobile Bay Sierra Club’s presentation by Glen Coffee on the topic of “Historic Mining of Alabama’s Coastal Sands by Maintenance of the Mobile Harbor Ship Channel.”

Glen’s talk will summarize how historic dredging and disposal practices to maintain and enlarge the Mobile Harbor Outer Bar Channel into the Gulf of Mexico has resulted in the mining of coastal sands from Alabama’s western nearshore environment.  The cumulative loss of those sands since the 1890s has contributed to the erosion of the Sand/Pelican Island Bar, Dauphin Island, and Mississippi’s barrier islands to the west.

Glen attended the University of Alabama, receiving B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biology with an emphasis in ecological studies.  He retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after a 31-year career in which he served as a Biologist and Project Manager, working on numerous Civil and Military projects in the U.S. and a variety of activities in Central and South America and Iraq.  After retiring, he worked for another decade as an environmental consultant for several national consulting firms.
