Worship with Bethel AME

August 14, 2022, 10:45 am11:30 am

Open Table is invited to worship at Bethel AME – a historically African-American congregation and denomination – on August 14th along with the members of All Saints. We are also invited to worship at All Saints the following Sunday when Bethel AME congregants will visit and share in their service. This “church swap” is the fruit of recent conversations between the Bethel AME and All Saints congregations in an intentional effort to bridge the racial divide within the city of Mobile. In a 1960 interview with “Meet the Press”, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “I think it is one of the tragedies of our nation… that eleven o’clock on Sunday morning is one of the most segregated hours… in Christian America.” In scripture, Jesus prayed that the church “may be one.” This effort is an outward and visible sign of such a possibility to bring about the racial reconciliation that our nation so desperately needs and the unification of the Church Universal – which are both signs of the completion of the Beloved Community.

Remote participants can click on the “Zoom and dial in click here” section of the Bethel AME home page to join us in worship.
