SUMMARY:GCCC: Oyster Farm Tour
DESCRIPTION:Our recent What If We Get It Right? book study participants were fascinated by the section on ocean farming and the author’s interview with Green Wave ocean farmer Bren Smith. Although we don’t have kelp farms on the Gulf Coast\, we do have several oyster farms\, and have planned a special GCCC fall field trip to one of the original oyster farms on Fort Morgan Peninsula\, the Admiral Shellfish Company. \nThe farm owner\, Anthony Ricciardone\, will be joining us for the group tour and is giving us a non-profit discount for participants on Thursday\, November 6\, at 10 am. The tour is limited to 20 persons\, so the first 20 persons to respond to this announcement will receive a spot. The cost is $10 per person and can be paid on the day of the tour by cash or check. Join Indivisible Mobile on Saturday\, Oct. 18 from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. at Government Plaza in downtown Mobile. And in order to keep our spirits up (spirits! Get it?)\, we are making this protest a Halloween party! Come in a costume that expresses your hope\, your fear\, your outrage\, or even just the ridiculousness of the current regime. If you would prefer not to wear a costume\, please dress in all black to signify that we are in mourning over the state of our nation. (Again: not giving up.) \nWe will begin at Government Plaza and protest there for at least an hour\, and then we’ll move to Mardi Gras Park for some announcements\, a brief address\, and some Halloween fun! \nNational 50501 (50 protests\, 50 states\, 1 movement) leaders organize these pro-democracy\, pro-freedom\, pro-compassion\, anti-cruelty nationwide demonstrations with our local Indivisible Mobile and Baldwin County chapters. \nOpen Table supports an informed citizenry and encourages members to engage in activities that work to bring God’s dream to aliveness in our world: a world where all are treated with dignity and respect\, where the vulnerable are protected\, the hungry are fed\, the poor are not taken advantage of\, those in prison are visited\, and all who are suffering receive compassion and sustenance. \n

Please come to a good old-fashioned community gathering for a night of fellowship and support. How are you feeling about our local election results? What concerns do you have for the future of our city? For the last several months\, racism and anti-Blackness have been on the rise\, with our country’s president firing most Black people in any position of power\, especially Black women. He’s sending troops into cities with Black mayors. HBCU’s are under new attacks\, with repeated bomb scares\, etc. How are you dealing emotionally with these developments? How are you handling the daily deportations\, without a hint of due process\, of migrants and refugees? How are you feeling about the recent assaults on free speech? How is your faith serving you in all this? Please bring your insights\, observations\, and personal experiences to share. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our adult education book study\, One God and Two Religions: Christians and Muslims as Neighbors by Amir Hussain. This week we will discuss the conclusion\, “Paths of Coexistence in a Shared Future.” Henry Brewster will facilitate. \nIslam is a religion of violence and behind every Muslim there lurks a potential terrorist. Islam is a threat to values of the Christian West. They are like oil and water. Clearly\, they don’t mix. \nOne God and Two Religions confronts these popular perceptions head-on. With keen insight and gentle understanding\, Amir Hussain explores the differences between Christianity and Islam\, as well as the many things these two enduring faith traditions hold in common – including\, first and foremost\, their belief in and desire to be faithful to the one\, true God; their shared roots and scripture (from the Jewish faith); and the spiritual values of peace and social justice. \nWritten for Christians by Muslim world-religions scholar\, the book is divided into two parts. Part 1\, provides an overview of the Islamic faith and of the lives of Muslims in North America today. Chapters focus on the place and identity of Muslims in society\, as well as on the importance and role of Muhammad\, the Qur’an\, and basic beliefs and practices (The Five Pillars of Islam). Part 2\, explores key points for dialogue\, including issues of violence and jihad\, the roles of women and men\, and the mystical tradition within Islam. The final two chapters look at interfaith dialogue and the practical aspects of being good “neighbors.” \nIn all of this\, the book invites the reader to a place of reconciliation\, to a place where the truth and value of each of these great faith traditions can be recognized and honored by the other. In the end\, the metaphor of oil and water is an interesting one for the reality of conflict and the hope for reconciliation between Islam and Christianity today.
