SUMMARY:Healing the Heart of Democracy: Chapter 8
DESCRIPTION:At a critical time in American life\, Palmer looks with realism and hope at how to deal with our political tensions for the sake of the common good—without the shouting\, blaming\, or defaming so common in our civic organizations and faith communities today. First published in 2011\, we are reading an updated 2024 edition. For this class\, read the Chapter 8: The Unwritten History of the Heart. Liz will facilitate.

SUMMARY:Healing Creation: Honoring Nature and Each Other
DESCRIPTION:Faith communities across the country are on the frontlines of climate action\, leading with hope\, compassion\, and courage. The Faith + Climate Film Series brings together powerful voices representing many faith traditions to explore how our spiritual traditions call us to care for creation and each other. \nThis week we will watch the sixth film in this series\, Healing Creation: Honoring Nature and Each Other. \nRestoring healthy creation is a multifaceted effort that requires us to go back to naturally occurring practices that promote biodiversity\, encourage conservation\, and prioritize native plants and practices. This film features Rev. Sharee Wharton and Dr. Rebecca Wiese sharing native plant and garden success. \nAnn Reimer will lead.

SUMMARY:Believe: Why Everyone Should Be Religious
DESCRIPTION:For many years\, Ross Douthat has written columns as both a committed Catholic and a conservative in the New York Times. He is an astute observer of culture who manages to write with great depth without being condescending or “hackish.” This book on the reasonablenes of religious belief comes at a time when there is a fresh interest in religious belief in parts of society that were\, up until recently\, dismissive of the role of religion in modern life. \nDouthat has a modest goal with this book. For readers who may have begun to question the relevance of religion to consider taking the first steps toward religious belief but not merely because religious belief is “psychologically helpful.” \nInstead\, he claims that unbelievers should consider religious belief because it has a real “intellectual advantage.” Religious belief\, in other words\, is the best explanation of reality. It is nonbelief\, not religious belief\, that requires us to deny what our reason tells us. \nJoin us as we begin our new book study\, reading the introduction and chapter 1. Nic Wood will facilitate. \nAll are welcome.

SUMMARY:Believe: Why Everyone Should Be Religious\, Chapter 6
\nJoin us as we continue our new book study\, reading and discussing chapter six. \nAll are welcome.

SUMMARY:Daylight Savings Time Ends
DESCRIPTION:Don’t forget to turn your clocks back for an extra hour of sleep! \nAs we shift back into standard time\, we are reminded of the thresholds in our own lives\, and what we can learn from the thresholds in the living world. The leaf that has spent the year growing will now burst into brilliant color before its release. The delicate balance between day and night moves\, and the northern hemisphere starts to settle into the shorter days and longer nights of autumn and winter.
