Scripture Reading & Sermon

A Poem

We invite you to listen contemplatively to the poem “Wild Geese”, read by its author Mary Oliver. Consider how the speaker of the poem invites the reader into a dialogue about suffering in a way similar to how we, as a congregation, carry each other’s burdens: “Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.” The poet invites us to shed the weight of expectations (“You do not have to be good…”) and embrace the truth of our fundamental connectedness and belonging. May this poem remind us of Jesus whose Way is a balm to the suffering and good news to those who feel as though they do not belong. In difficult times, may we find some respite in the beauty around us “announcing our place in the family of things.”
