Wade in the Water: Fear

October 23, 2023, 6:00 pm8:00 pm

Please mark your calendars for Wade in the Water’s regular monthly meeting, MONDAY, OCTOBER 23, from 6 – 8 PM, at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 714 Savannah Street, Mobile.

At this meeting, we’ll watch the fifth episode of The 1619 Project documentary, entitled “Fear”—in which Nikole Hannah-Jones and Michelle Alexander trace how slavery’s forced physical labor and ownership of Black bodies transformed into slave patrols and, eventually, our modern-day police system. This episode explores how modern policing, surveillance, and the criminalization of Black Americans has its roots in a historical fear of Black rebellion and a centuries-long quest for freedom.

Following the film, in lieu of our usual group discussion, we will join a gathering in the Bethel sanctuary for the family of Jawan Dallas, who died on July 2 after being tased by Mobile Police Department officers. The Rev. William Barber of the Poor People’s Campaign will address the rally via a remote hookup. Please see the flyer for this event below.

Since we’ll be aiming to start the film as close to six o’clock as possible, please arrive a little before six to get your snack and find a seat.

We hope you’ll plan to join us for this evening of good fellowship, information, and inspiration!
