Wade in the Water: Feeding the Gulf Coast

Please mark your calendar for Wade in the Water’s monthly meeting, Monday, November 24, from 6 – 8 PM, in the chapel at All Saints Episcopal Church, 151 South Ann Street, Mobile.

According to Feeding the Gulf Coast, a food bank that serves 24 counties in South Alabama, South Mississippi, and the Florida Panhandle, 1 in 6 individuals, including 1 in 4 children, face food insecurity in our area. The government shutdown, along with cruel policies by the Trump administration, has upended food assistance programs, making life for low-income families harder than it already was. About 42 million people rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for help with putting food on their tables. The official status of SNAP is changing daily, but the battles between the courts, the states, and the White House have thrown the program into chaos and rendered it dysfunctional. For our November meeting, the Monday before Thanksgiving, we’ve invited a representative from Feeding the Gulf Coast to tell us about the work they do and give us an update on volunteer opportunities. We’ll also hear from members of our two main churches, Bethel AME and All Saints Episcopal, about efforts to respond to the crisis and ways we might help in our own faith communities.
